#100Days100Poems of What’s Next!? Day 82

It is haunting. And it is relentless and inescapable. The pattern continues.

With Apologies to the Blastmaster
Who Has Been Asking for Years

you attack kids in parks (killing them)
and sleeping EMTs (killing them)
you even attack those who protect us
dressed in their fatigues.

and our fatigue is the constant refrain:
who protects us from you?
who protects the US
from you?
who?

Pattern as Prelude?

It’s hard to shed the
weight of history, the past’s
present shackles but

I can’t shake this dread
feeling: after all is said
and done, acquittal.

Then what choice but to
burn it all down? Blow it all
up? Or straight wreck shit?

#100Days100Poems of What’s Next!? Day 78 #FoundPoem

Today’s poem is a found poem from a David Corn column that appeared in Mother Jones on March 24, 2021.

If You’re Invited, Don’t Go To This Party

The Republican Party is not a party
of ideas or policies.
It is a party of
grievance
—including phony grievance—
that is animated
by the organizing
principle of tribal
resentment.

It is hard to compromise with that,
and it is tough to achieve unity
with those who embrace
such a stand.

GOP leaders now see
their future as tied to
the exploitation of unfounded angst,
the fanning of false narratives, and
the suppression of democracy.

The party resides within
a dark, nonsensical, racist framework—
and there is no sign this is a framework
its leaders
or its voters
wish
to cancel.

#100Days100Poems of What’s Next!? Day 77

Writing through the emotions.

What Good The Love Poem

when the American pastime is a superspreader event
when three strikes gets life
when 18 strikes and taking a life gets outrage
	and the machine walks on
when the polyglot sorrows translate into every ear
when the embrace of poverty is capitalism’s only intimacy
when hopes are relegated to dream-sequences in the latest
	binge-necessary escape
when the wettest kisses are chef’s goodbyes
when mask-hidden smiles are never as loud as angered eyes
when hand-washing is the only hand-holding possible
when the absence-aches and the abscess-aches
and the wheezing hollows and the hallowed whimsies
and the old normal and the new normal are/were neither and neither
when the stretch of affection is too close to infection
and justice is only a word in a dictionary
	and various platitudes
when the time daylight saves just prolongs the drowning

what good the love poem
when the only rhymes
are lamentation and wrath
and goodness and trouble and obduracy

#100Days100Poems of What’s Next!? Day 76 #FoundPoem #FoundPoetry

I imagine William Carlos Williams would be pleased with the ubiquity of memes–the found poetry therein is quite surprising. What’s more, a meme can tap into a rage or a thought that is sometimes unable to make the leap from our own tongues.

Is There An Answer?

What would it say
about America
if Derek Chauvin goes
free
after being CAUGHT
ON TAPE
choking George Floyd
to death
for
no reason?

And the meme from which it came.

Easter Weekend 2021

The time that marks the
mythological rebirth,
no, resurrection

of this city that
never sleeps, but which, for some
time now has, in fact,

been sleeping, is now.
Restaurants and cinemas,
concert venues and

other such places
are starting to open once
again (NOT BROADWAY!).

But more than this big
city is the virus that
never sleeps, nor hides.

Emerge from your caves.
Seek your joys and salvation
out in the city.

But keep your distance.
Get your jabs. Wear a mask. Stay
safe. It’s not over.
