#100Days100Poems of What’s Next!? Day 85 America’s New Theme Song

Presented without commentary.

Should We Kneel for This New Anthem?

Oh say can you see by the gun’s steady sight
where so proudly bullets hailed at the gunfight’s fast bleeding
whose full clips and burst stars through the perilous school
o’er the desktops we watched were so violently creeping
and the muzzle’s red glare, the shots bursting in air
gave proof through the land that the ammosexuals didn’t care
oh say does that gun worshipping banner yet wave
o’er the land of the dead and the mourning, post-rampage.

For the first 100 days of the Biden administration, this website will feature a new poem of What’s Next!? These pieces can be calls to action, calls to attention, or calls to anger. They will light the way and guide the fight. They will get us moving and keep our momentum. They will be filled with hope, with anger, with sorrow. They will get us into good trouble and point out the trouble we need to stop. They will be polished gems, or rough-cut drafts of rage, or in-process pieces searching for peace. They may be haiku or tanka, limericks or lyrics, verses free or fettered.

#100Days100Poems of What’s Next!? Day 83

Every day the news is the same, isn’t it?

American Metronome

We mark our days with the same ticks
as in
today we had a mass shooting
today a white man spreads supremacist violence
today a cop shoots a black man
today a white man spreads another lie
today a virus variant spreads to another corner of America
today a cop shoots a black woman
today the wealthy corner their markets & line their pockets
today the hate bursts into neighborhoods like bottlerockets
today a cop shoots a black child
today food pantry lines stretch beyond their hunger
today the hunger for change makes us rise
today a trial starts
today a trial carries on
today a trial ends
today an acquittal
today justice hides in the corner
and so it goes
day in
day out
week in
week out
month in
month out
year in
year out
in its infinite refrain
repeated infinitely

#100Days100Poems of What’s Next!? Day 82

It is haunting. And it is relentless and inescapable. The pattern continues.

With Apologies to the Blastmaster
Who Has Been Asking for Years

you attack kids in parks (killing them)
and sleeping EMTs (killing them)
you even attack those who protect us
dressed in their fatigues.

and our fatigue is the constant refrain:
who protects us from you?
who protects the US
from you?
who?

Writing through the emotions.

What Good The Love Poem

when the American pastime is a superspreader event
when three strikes gets life
when 18 strikes and taking a life gets outrage
	and the machine walks on
when the polyglot sorrows translate into every ear
when the embrace of poverty is capitalism’s only intimacy
when hopes are relegated to dream-sequences in the latest
	binge-necessary escape
when the wettest kisses are chef’s goodbyes
when mask-hidden smiles are never as loud as angered eyes
when hand-washing is the only hand-holding possible
when the absence-aches and the abscess-aches
and the wheezing hollows and the hallowed whimsies
and the old normal and the new normal are/were neither and neither
when the stretch of affection is too close to infection
and justice is only a word in a dictionary
	and various platitudes
when the time daylight saves just prolongs the drowning

what good the love poem
when the only rhymes
are lamentation and wrath
and goodness and trouble and obduracy

Easter Weekend 2021

The time that marks the
mythological rebirth,
no, resurrection

of this city that
never sleeps, but which, for some
time now has, in fact,

been sleeping, is now.
Restaurants and cinemas,
concert venues and

other such places
are starting to open once
again (NOT BROADWAY!).

But more than this big
city is the virus that
never sleeps, nor hides.

Emerge from your caves.
Seek your joys and salvation
out in the city.

But keep your distance.
Get your jabs. Wear a mask. Stay
safe. It’s not over.

They Don’t Even Hide It Anymore

White supremacy works its will
(which is actually a won’t)
behind locked doors,
under plantation paintings
flanked by six klansmen of the
coronapocalypse.
And though the black woman
who came knocking,
curious and concerned,
was taken away,
callously cuffed,
your conniving con
broadcast clear
through glass walls.

We see you.
We see your shuffle and shift,
your bait and switch,
and these knocks will be answered,
one way
or the other.
